The new community market that kicks off this Friday in the Town Hall has been plagiarised from St Lawrence, so thanks to Constable Deirdre Mezbourian (pictured). Last year I was taken up to the St Lawrence Parish Hall to see their monthly market for myself and decided that we need one of those in St Helier. We are starting out with bric-a-brac and car boot type stalls, but if it's a success we will copy St Lawrence further and provide food. Unlike our western cousin, we don't have parking on the doorstep, however, which is a problem both for the stall holders and would be visitors. Given that there is so much empty space in Sand Street car park for most of the time, it begs the question why that car park can't be changed to allow folk to park for more than the 3 hour maximum. I will take this up with the Minister of TTS as people frequently tell me that they can't attend functions in the Town Hall as the nearest car park prohibits them from staying for long enough. Which seems pretty daft. Meanwhile, we are exploring how we can increase the capacity of the Parish-owned car park at Lempriere Street, as if the Town Hall had a decent sized off-street car park we could provide much more in the way of community markets and the like. Anyway, come along on Friday 9 March between 10am and 2pm and snap up a bargain.

What bout the market that used to be next to the Office pub, you make no mention of that yet I remember that market well
The 3 hour limit is to keep commuters out of the town center, diverting them to the Esplanade or Pier Rd.
If that is actually worth doing, why not allow 5 hours instead of 3? Sure, you'd get people moving their cars at lunchtime, but combine that with not allowing season tickets and it would just be way too much aggro... few people would bother.
With the Independent Commission on Electoral reform being hijacked by Mr Bailhache & his cronies, (the biggest threat to Democracy here since 1940), is this the best analysis of the situation you can come up with?

Why would anyone use Hope St when the Weighbridge is now such a better venue? Would it cost less?
It's not better than the Weighbridge but it's different, just as the stalls we now have in French Lane are. As far as the cost goes, I don't know how much the charges are for using the Weighbridge, but if you phone the Town Hall you can find out. A street market shouldn't cost anything in the way of fees.
Look stop writing all this boring rubbish about a town market and dopey Mezbourian and get behind Rico, Stuart and Trevor in addressing the Graham Power illegal suspension and bringing down this corrupt Government of half-wits. my views on the electoral commission have been clearly stated and consistently held: I did not agree that the new PPC should seek to change the terms of reference to allow States Members on the panel, and voted against that proposal at our first meeting. However, I was in a minority. Similarly, when the States debated the matter I voted against. Again, I was in the minority. So, we have States Members on the electoral commission. We will have to wait and see what comes out of the panel's work. I am hoping their proposal actually meets with the approval of the States and the public in a referendum, and we get an improved legislature at the end of the process. The proof of the pudding, and all that!
